A 79-year-old woman, who describes herself as a cat-lover, was sentenced to more than a week behind bars by local authorities after she consistently fed stray cats in their neighborhood.
Nancy Segula is a resident of Garfield Height in Ohio, where it is considered a minor misdemeanor to offer food to stray cats and dogs in the neighborhood. The judge gave Segula multiple citations for feeding the felines and ordered her to spend about 10 days in jail, according to a report by Fox 8.
“It’s too much of a sentence for me for what I’m doing,” she told the station. “When there are so many people out there that do bad things.”
The station said Segula was placed on probation, but her most recent violation, her fourth overall, led to the judge’s sentencing. She is expected to report to the Cuyahoga County Jail on August 11.
“I used to have a neighbor that had a couple cats and he moved away so he left them,” Segula said, noting that she started feeding stray cats back in 2017. “I would always feed them and care for them because I was worried about them and I’m a cat lover. Once my neighbors got upset about it, they called the animal warden.”
