A woman has been accused of trying to poison a neighbor’s dog, after the owners found her trying to do so in their home’s surveillance cameras in Colorado Springs.
72-year-old Margaret Werker was caught throwing poisoned food over her neighbor’s fence. Luckily, the dog named Wrigley was unharmed, which left Werker charged with aggravated cruelty to animals shortly after the incident.
She pleaded guilty to the charges and she was ordered by the judge to pay $250 in donations to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPP).
HSPPP said poisoning cases are difficult to prove, unless the perpetrator was caught red-handed. From the video, investigators found Werker throwing food over the fence, and when it was tested, it showed the ground chicken likely contained antifreeze, which is a poisonous substance.
Animal Law Enforcement sources said they had numerous complaints of barking dogs in the area, which may be the reason why someone could have wanted to silence the dog.
