Summer is already here and it serves as a great time to bond with your companion animals. But, higher temperatures mean higher risks for your pets – injuries, skin and ear infections, and a possibility of heat stroke. Here are some tips for you to still enjoy the summer season and avoid any problems.

1. Plenty of water and shade
Pets get thirstier when it’s hot, so dehydration is a huge possibility during the summer. Dry gums and excessive drooling are signs of dehydration, so make sure to give them fresh, clean water. Direct sunlight can lead to heat stroke, so keep them in the shade.

2. Apply sunscreen
Pets get sunburns too, which can even lead to skin cancer. Apply pet sunscreens every 3-4 hours to the least hair-covered spots: bellies, ears and nose.

3. Don’t shave your pet
Feel free to trim your pet’s fur, but never shave. Their coats are designed to keep them cool during the summer and warm in the winter.

4. Mind your walking hours
If you take your dog out for a walk, make sure it is in the early morning or late evening, but never in the middle of the day. While outside, bring them water too!

5. Keep parasite off
During summer, fleas, ticks, mosquitos, and other parasites are everywhere. Ask your vet for medical prescriptions that can help your pet pest-free.
