Humans and animals are very much alike in many ways – including a heart that is always ready to help and be compassionate.
Here are seven stories when animals helped humans and saved their lives!
1. Whale protects woman from shark
Scientist Nan Hauser was in the middle of the water when a humpback whale began pushing her. She did not know what was going on until she saw a large tiger shark swimming nearby. She realized that the whale was trying to protect her and was guiding her back to her boat. Nan, whose job was protecting whales, had never experienced that before, but she knew that whales sometimes displayed a similar behavior when they protect seals from killer whales.
2. Gorilla saves a young boy
In 1996, a young boy was visiting the Brookfield Zoo with his family when he fell into the gorilla habitat below. Binti Jua, a western lowland gorilla, went over to the hurt boy, scooped him in his arms and cradled him until the paramedics arrived.
3. Pig saves woman having a heart attack
Jo Ann Altsman was a senior woman suffering from a heart attack in her home. Luckily, she had her pig Lulu with her. Pigs are incredibly smart creatures, so when she figured out what was going on, she ran outside and oinked to people passing by, until one driver stopped and checked on why the pig was distressed. Lulu led the man to Jo Ann, and thankfully, the ambulance was called before it was too late.
4. Pit bull saves family from fire
A fire broke out in a family’s apartment. Sasha, the family’s pit bull, quickly barked to alert the family until the mother woke up. Sasha also helped save the family’s baby and carried her off the bed with her mouth.
5. Parrot saves family from fire
It was four o’clock in the morning when LauraJean Niesel and her fiance woke up to the sound of their parrot, Pearly. Pearly was alerting his family that a fire had engulfed a part of their house. Thanks to the bird, the family got out safely and the fire department was called in time that prevented the fire from spreading.
6. Sea lion saves man after he jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge.
Then 19-year-old Kevin Hines was suffering from mental illness and he attempted to take his own life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. He survived the impact but suffered severe injuries and was trying to stay afloat until he felt a creature bumping him and helping him swim. He later found out that it was a sea lion from the photos taken by onlookers. Now, he travels the world educating on mental health and suicide prevention.
7. Lions save girl from kidnappers
A 12-year-old Ethiopian girl was kidnapped by a group of four men. A pride of lions then chased them off, and the animals stayed with the girl until the police arrived. “They stood guard until we found her and then they just left her like a gift and went back into the forest,” said the police.
