People being taught upon the basic knowledge and how to properly take care of birds.

The recent seminar entitled “Getting to Know Birds” was held at the Lianas Department Store in Alabang, Muntinlupa City featured speakers respected throughout the industry. Chiqui Gomez discussed “Basic Bird Keeping,” while Christopher Cavan talked about “Hand Feeding” for birds. Gerick Briones’ “Bird Genetics” fascinated attendees, and regular Animal Scene contributor Amelita Lupena-Escalona enlightened the audience regarding “Bird Show Standards, Permits and Bird Clubs’ Pros and Cons.”

Attendees came from Cavite, Rizal, Laguna, Manila, and Quezon City, with one from as far as Mindoro. Their enthusiasm for the various topics was such that the allotted time for each was over quickly, and there were many requests for a second edition of the seminar. They also broadened their circle of friends in the hobby and shared information with those they met at the seminar, where camaraderie was easily fostered.

Organized by Bird Industry Research and Development Society, Incorporated or BIRDS (headed by their president, Hansel Sy, whose ringnecks will be on the cover of the next issue of Animal Scene), with the aim of enlightening attendees, contributing to their knowledge of the hobby, and enhancing the bird keeping hobby, it was hoped that beginners who attended would improve their aviaries and produce better progeny.
