A Puspin named Pugal gained attention online when a post by The Cordilleran Sun went viral, explaining that Pugal’s presence in Mt. Pulag threatened the mountain’s ecosystem.

WHO IS PUGAL?

Pugal has become a minor celebrity among hikers in Mt. Pulag, frequently seen wandering the trails and featured in social media posts.

While many found Pugal adorable, environmental advocates raised concerns: As an invasive predator, the Cat posed a serious threat to the protected area’s native wildlife, including Birds, Rats, and Reptiles.

Eventually, Pugal was safely removed by the Mt. Pulag Protected Landscape staff and placed under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ custody, as per conservation regulations.

NETIZENS REACT

While the move was environmentally necessary, people on social media expressed sadness.

Some Facebook users commented that there should have been more humane ways to remove Pugal from the mountain. Others said that the hikers are the real threat to Mt. Pulag’s wildlife due to the trash being left on the trail.

DOWN THE MOUNTAIN

Pugal was eventually adopted and is now being rehomed in Bokod.

According to a post by Furvent Animal Rescue and Advocacy, Pugal is safe and receiving proper care. However, he is still adjusting to his surroundings.
