Kyle Mulinder and Taiyo Masuda, both GoPro videographers, were on a trip in New Zealand over the weekend with some of their other friends.

They tried kayaking off the coast of Kaikoura, when Masuda caught on video, what must have been the best part of their vacation.

Masuda posted the video on his Instagram account, which showed what appeared to be a New Zealand fur seal rising from the surface and smacked Mulinder in the face with an octopus. As a video pro, of course, he added some slow-motion clips to make it more interesting.

“I’ve never had such an amazing kayak everrrrr!,” wrote Masuda on his Instagram post.

In an interview with Yahoo 7 News, Masuda said he and his friends have been watching the seal and the octopus fighting for quite a while already. They saw the animals dive deeper into the ocean, until the seal popped up on the surface and hit Mulinder with the octopus in its mouth.

“He thrashed it in mid fight and my face happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Mulinder told Yahoo 7 News. “I was like, ‘Mate, what just happened?’ It was weird because it happened so fast but I could feel all the hard parts of the octopus on my face like ‘dum dum dum.’”

After the “slapping” incident, the octopus clung to Mulinder’s kayak until the other helped bring it back to the sea.
