Nick Abbott, a 31-year old deaf man, decided it was about time to adopt a puppy. Then, he met six-week old Emerson, a black Labrador from the foster-based rescue, NFR Maine, and everything changed for him since then.
Lindsay Powers from the rescue center narrated that the little pup was rescued from a shelter in Florida and was transferred to their location. Emerson had a canine parvovirus and experienced seizures. Luckily, he survived the ordeal and was put up for adoption.
“Once we got him home from the vet’s office from Florida, we realized he had hearing difficulties,” Powers told Good Morning America, a morning show. “He doesn’t let it bother him at all, though he’s a typical puppy.”
In March, Powers tried to make a plea on Facebook to find Emerson a forever home. Weeks later, they received an application.
“’Right off the bat,’ he said, ‘I’m deaf also and I feel like we’d have a good connection,’” Powers recalled. She then processed Abbott’s application on the same day.
When Abbott and Emerson met each other for the first time, it seemed as if the stars have aligned for the two of them, because they immediately hit it off and were “meant for each other,” said Richelle Abbott, Nick’s mother.
“It’s amazing,” Richelle told GMA in an interview. “Whenever they’re together, Emerson is always finding a way to lean on Nick.”
She added that her son, Nick, has been teaching their pup sign language like, sit, lay down and come.
“If Nick reaches up and shakes his ear lobe, Emerson will bark – it’s so cute,” she said.
“He had such a rough start to life and ended up with an absolute fairytale ending,” Powers said of Emerson.
