Pedro the turtle was adopted by his loving family. Back then, he had already been missing one hind leg. After a few months, he returned home and somehow, his other hind leg has also been lost during his runaway adventure.
His owners brought him to the Louisiana State University’s (LSU) Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Baton Rouge. There, the vets concluded that he was just fine, other than the fact that he was, well, very accident-prone.
“There was nothing medically wrong with him,” Ginger Guttner, communications manager for LSU’s School of Veterinary Medicine told CNN in an interview. “But of course, he didn’t have any back legs, so our doctors quickly had to figure out what they were going to do.”
Luckily, a zoological intern at the hospital had the greatest idea.
The intern picked up a Lego car kit, and used some syringe parts to create a wheelchair for Pedro.
“Veterinary medicine often requires this MacGyver-like quality,” Guttner said. “I would say the majority of special equipment we use has been fashioned or re-fashioned for a specific case.”
