Even before becoming part of the royal family, Meghan Markle has been fond of animals and she has been adopting stray pups. She is a patron of animal welfare charity Mayhew and has two rescue dogs under her care – a beagle and a German Shepherd cross.
Her beagle, Guy, is now living with her and Harry in their Windsor home, while German Shepherd cross Bogard was unable to travel with her, because he was already too old to leave Meghan’s Toronto home. She and Harry got a Labrador back in September.
According to a report by The Sun, Meghan wants her son Archie to also know the joy of having a loyal pet and growing up with one. She is planning to tour rescue centers near their home to find a suitable pet right after Archie has been christened last Saturday.
“Meghan really wants a dog with whom Archie can associate his childhood,” a royal source told The Sun. Meghan thinks a rescue would be better for Archie than a puppy. “She hopes they strike up an incredible bond and Archie can make plenty of memories.”
Meghan’s mom, Doria, was said to encourage her to expand the “Sussex dog pack.”
It is common in the royal family to own pets. Take the queen as the perfect example. Queen Elizabeth II’s corgis each has butlers that cater to them every mealtime. Though her last purbred corgi died last year, she still has some corgi mixes that receives the same royal treatment.
Princess William and Duchess Kate are often accompanied by their black cocker spaniel, Lupo. The couple got her back in January 2012 and, just like the royals, she has already travelled the world and often rode helicopters!
Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles also love dogs. Bowles’ favorite is the Jack Russell, so she and Prince Charles adopted Bluebell and Beth from the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in 2012.
