Carol Howarth was just about to do some shopping in the town of Haverfordwest, Wales. It looked like a normal day as she parked her car. Little did she know, the most unexpected thing was about to happen.
As she shops inside the market, a swarm of about 20,000 bees were sticking at the car. Tom Moses, a local man who just happened to pass by the car, called in a team of beekeepers to take a look.
“It was spectacular. I was driving through when I spotted the big brown splodge,” Moses said. “A lot of people were really amazed by it, cars were slowing down and people were taking pictures of it.”
Moses explained that he decided to call in the beekeepers, because he was concerned that someone “might do something stupid” especially because the bees was just in the middle of town outside a pub.
When Howarth returned, the beekeepers have already resolved the problem. However, Howarth realized the some of the bees might have followed her home, so she called the beekeepers once again.
“We think the queen bee had been attracted to something in the car, perhaps something sweet, and had got into a gap on the boot’s wiper blade or perhaps the hinge,” Roger Burns of Pembrokeshire Beekeepers, said. “The swarm of around 20,000 had followed her and were sat around on the boot of the car.”
Burns added that it was the strangest thing they had ever seen “in three decades of beekeeping.”
“It is natural for them to follow the queen, but it is a strange thing to see and quite surprising to have a car followed for two days. It was quite amusing,” he said.
