The Missoula County Sherriff’s office received a call early in the morning on Friday about a black bear breaking into a family’s home in Montana.
The family told officers they heard a large noise coming from downstairs, so they investigated what they thought was a burglar, only to find out the bear was in their home.
When the deputies arrived at the house, they expected the worse – the bear looking for food through trash or causing any form of property damage. However, they found the animal fast asleep on the top shelf of a closet.
Jamie Jonkel, a wildlife management specialist from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks told the Missoulian that the bear might have seen the house’s “slightly ajar” door and he might have “tested it and stepped inside.” The animal thrashed the place, only to realize that he cannot get out, so he decided to find a comfortable-looking edge and take a nap.
The two deputies tried their best to rouse the bear and let it out, but to no avail.
“When we first walked up and saw him in the closet, we just started laughing,” Sargent, one of the two deputies, told local media.
“I was assuming the bear would just come running out of there,” Beatty, the other officer said. “He just went back to bed.”
“He would look at us and yawn,” Sargent added. “Never did anything aggressive toward us.”
The Fish, Wildlife and Parks then arrived to tranquilize the bear and relocate it to a nearby forest.
