Mayor Josephine Alcantara-Cruz confirmed that the “butanding season” in Donsol, Sorsogon province has officially started.

Donsol is one of the very few places in the world where people could see a lot of whale sharks during the “butanding season” which spans from November through June. Whale sharks are known to feed on Donsol river for six to seven months.

The animals are known to be friendly to humans, but officials reiterate the need to be respectful to the animals and not to scare them away by touching or harassing them.

For several years, Donsol had a lot of whale shark sighting, but Alcantara-Cruz told The Manila Bulletin in an interview, that this year’s season had a minimal number of sightings of whale sharks.

“Usually po sightings starts around December pero regular like everyday sighting starts around February to May,” she daid.

In a Manila Bulletin report, it said that regular whale shark sightings in 2018 started as early as December until May.
