Along the interstate highway BR-364 in Brazil, drivers and commuters were surprised to see something slithering in the middle of the road – making them stop on their tracks and take a look, twice.

Bystanders and some drivers went out of their cars at the northwestern city of Porto Velho to help an anaconda that is 9.8 feet long (or around three meters) cross the road safely.

“We decided to stop the car and get out. There are no signs for the cars to wait so she can cross. I have seen snakes run over the highway before, and think such thing is a crime,” Italo Nascimento Fernandes and his wife told local media. He added that other people followed thru his example and got out of their cars too to help the poor animal.

The anaconda managed to cross the multiple-lane highway, climbed over the guardrail in the center of the road and safely cross to the other side of the street.

G1 Globo, a Brazilian media outlet that originally posted the story, asked biologist Flavio Terassani about the anaconda. Terassani assumed the anaconda is 10 years old and was most likely looking for food or shelter when it came up to the bustling road.

The gigantic snake in the video is not venomous, but zoologists warn people to be cautious near them, because they might attack when it feels threatened.
