A cassowary, a giant bird that has long claws on each foot and is considered one of the most dangerous birds in the world, has killed its owner in Florida.
The victim, 75-year old Marvin Hajos, owned a farm and was raising cassowaries along with other exotic animals in Alachua county in the north central part of the state, local TV WCLB said.
Reports said Hajos fell to the ground by accident and the bird attacked him.
“It appears that the gentleman who was killed, raised the birds and was injured after falling in a path near the Cassowary enclosure,” Jeff Taylor, the Fire Rescue Deputy Chief for Alachua County, told Buzzfeed News.
Hajos appears to have called 911 on Friday and a second call came from another person who reported a need for medical emergency that involves a large bird, according to Lt. Joshua Crews of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.
Hajos was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital, but he died shortly. Meanwhile, the bird is still at Hajos’ property as authorities continue their investigation on the incident.
Cassowaries are classified as Class II wildlife, which meant they pose a danger to humans and are subject to specific cage requirements, according to CNN. Alligators, clouded leopards and honey badgers are in the same category.
They can grow up to nearly six feet tall and weigh up to 170 pounds. They have very powerful legs that could let them jump seven feet straight up in the air. They could also run up to 31 miles per hour.
