Xiao He, a 37-year-old saltwater crocodile, was left bleeding after visitors threw rocks at him to see if he was real or not at the China-Africa Wildlife Zoo in Xiamen, Fujian Province last October 31.
According to a report by the Global Times, a group of tourists threw different sizes of rocks at the crocodile to know if it was alive.
The tourists left when one of the larger rocks, which weighed over two pounds, hit Xiao He’s head and left it bleeding.
“Our crocodile was already bleeding when we arrived to investigate, then we saw the large rock nearby,” said Xiao He’s caretaker Zhang Xiang to the Mirror.
Zhang said they began treating the croc after seeing him bleeding. Sadly, it will take 10 days to half a month for him to completely heal.
Weighing at 1,250 kg and measuring 5.8 metres, Xiao He is said to be the largest crocodile in Asia.
