An animal rights group is set to construct a rehabilitation center for abandoned and maltreated companion animals.

Bantay Hayop Davao (BHD) has formally signed a contract land lease for the construction of the BHD Animal Rehabilitation Center in Mintal last Saturday, March 13, according to a report by Sunstar Davao.

“Pinangarap po nating lahat na magkaroon ng karagdagan facility para sa mga companion animals na dumaan ng cruelty at abandonment,” BHD said in a press release.

In an interview with Sunstar Davao, BHD President Rovie Bullina said the construction of the center is another step in helping address animal welfare issues in the city. The rehabilitation center is one of the many programs they are working on, noting that the center will house animals who have been impounded and rescued where they will be treated and prepared for rehoming.

Currently, they are looking for additional funding for the construction of the center. For anyone who want to send contributions to the project, they can send a message through their official social media account.

“The organization’s goal is to counter stray problems, not just by rescuing but by educating the people of Davao City about the Animal Welfare Act (Republic Act [RA] 8485) and its amendments in RA 10631,” Bullina said. “Rescuing and impounding does not solve the problem we face in animal welfare, in fact it is an enabler.”
