Tourists often add the Nara Park as one of their destinations when they go to Japan. They are allowed to feed the deer with rice crackers, which are called shika senbei.
But since the 2019-coronavirus outbreak, there had been a sharp tourist drop, which left many of the animals deprived of the crispy snacks.
A viral post on Weibo, a popular social media site in China, showed that several of the animals crowded biscuit sellers to ask for some treat. The post had since been liked 560,000 times and shared 26,000 times.
Photos of the empty park also circulated on Facebook and other social media platforms.
“This is Nara Park in Japan. Due to a sharp drop in tourists, there are less people to feed them. So they are going to the seller themselves,” wrote one person on Facebook.
