The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) National Capital Region rescues a Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyria) last January 15, 2021.
The bird was caught by a resident near his house in Barangay Palatiw, Pasig City. He immediately reported it to the authorities, and through DENR’s East Field Office, the bird was successfully rescued.
It has since been brought to the Wildlife Rescue Center in Quezon City for evaluation.
“Swamphens are a large purple-bluish rail with a red bill and frontal shield and red legs,” wrote DENR in its Facebook post. “It feeds on shoots and other vegetation, as well as insects and mollusks, and is mostly found near water bodies, in this case, the Pasig River.”
“Swamphens are among the many types of wildlife species that Pasig River supports so it is important that we take care of the river as well as its connecting waterways,” they added.
