A woman was walking her dogs through a cemetery in Melbourne’s west when an unknown man approached her late last month and attacked her.

The man, who was described to have a large build and was wearing a black puffer jacket and white beanie, pushed the woman to the ground and tried to pull her pants down along Champion Road in Williamstown, according to police.

“I’d stopped to do something and wait for my dog to come back from chasing a rabbit and I got pushed from behind into the ground,” said the victim. “It really just came out of nowhere – I didn’t hear anyone behind me or around me.”

The victim’s dogs, Louie and RuPaul, attacked the offender, who then fled towards K.C. White Reserve on Park Crescent. The woman ran home and contacted the police.

“They viciously attacked him – like growling, biting – and I think with my screaming and the struggling it made him stop,” the woman said. “It’s amazing and I keep thinking about would have happened if they had run off or not… done anything.”

After inspecting and examining the crime scene, Detective Senior Constable Jenna Sladek from Westgate Sexual Offences & Child Abuse Investigation Team is asking for anyone who knows anything about the incident that could help them contact Crime Stoppers.

“We know people congregate at the cemetery at night so we are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the assault or may have been in the area at the time,” she said.

Senior Constable Sladek also did not forget to mention the two heroes.

“We’re classing them as little heroes,” she said.
