HOME-COOKED RECIPE

A was also kind enough to share her go-to recipe for her Dogs.

A says, “There’s a handy guide from Vegan Dog Nutrition that I follow to make sure the ratios are balanced.

Basically, it’s 1/2 meal legumes, 1/4 meal whole grains, 1/8 meal red, orange, or white vegetables, and 1/8 meal green veg. Then there are fruits, fats (ground seeds), and herbs. So, a typical meal with ingredients from the palengke would be:

1⁄4 cup cooked munggo, white beans, chickpeas, kidney beans, or black beans (boil with baking soda to make it easier to mash and digest)

1⁄4 cup mashed tokwa

1⁄4 cup cooked brown rice

2 tablespoons boiled kalabasa, kamote, gabi, saba, carrot, or potato

2 tablespoons chopped pechay, cabbage, baguio beans, or sayote

1 tablespoon ground toasted peanuts

1 teaspoon ground flaxseed

1⁄4 teaspoon turmeric with a pinch of black pepper

“Mashed altogether, this makes a meal for my 10-kilogram bunso, and I double the amount for my 20-kilogram senior.”

CANINES AND KINDNESS

What we want for our canine companions is a happy, healthy, and long life. If plant-based Dog food can contribute to this kind of life, then it should be given more importance and significant consideration.

Dogs are known for their loyal and kind nature. I think it’s great that they can consume food that is also not only kind to other animals, but to the planet, too!
