What would the world look like without humans? For a start, a lot cleaner.

Italy has now become the epicenter of the novel coronavirus outbreak of the continent, which left it no choice but to close all its establishments and businesses. The government put it under lockdown in an effort to prevent the further spread of the virus, which has claimes the lives of thousands of people around the globe.

The country used to battle overtourism and on a normal day, the Venice canal would be filled with tourists. Boat traffic used to be a problem and the canal never went empty for a day.

But since the lockdown, people have been sharing photos and videos of the clear water and marine animals rarely seen in the city.

In an interview with CNN, the Venice mayor’s office said the water may look clear, but its quality hasn’t improved.

“The water now looks cleaner because there is less traffic on the canals, allowing the sediment to stay at the bottom,” a spokesman told CNN.

But the lockdown still shows some positive environmental effects.

“The air, however is less polluted since there are less vaporette and foot traffic than usual because of the restricted movement of resident,” he added.
