An endangered rufous hornbill (Buceros hydrocorax) that appeared to have migrated from affect areas near Taal was rescued and turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Thursday, January 17.
In a Twitter post, DENR said the hornbill was rescued by a member of the Cavite Lions Club and turned it over to Assistant Secretary and concurrent Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) chief Ricardo Calderon.
The hornbill was rescued by Flor Locson, a member of the Cavite Educators Lions Club, in Bacoor, according to a report by Inquirer.net. Once it was turned over, Dr. Esteven Toledo and his staff from the Biodiversity Management Bureau’s Wildlife Rescue Center conducted check-up and assessment of the bird.
DENR Undersecretary Benny Antiporda encourages the public to help in rescuing the animals, and turn them over to keep them safe.
“Ang Taal Volcano po, ‘yang lugar na pong ‘yan ay protected area so we expect na maraming endangered species diyan lalo na po ‘yung mga ibon,” Antiporda first said in a press conference. “Huwag po nating sasaktan o gagalawin. We need to save ‘yung endangered species na ‘yan. Matagal po nating inalagaan ‘yan para huwag maging extinct.”
Antiporda added that anyone could surrender any wildlife species they find to their office, or the public could also contact members of the Lions Club withing Taal Volcano to turnover wildlife species.
