The horses, cows, and pigs that have survived the thick ashfall that enveloped the Taal Volcano island have been rescued by several residents and people from animal rescue organizations.
Most residents had the animals as part of raising their livestock, while others offered horse rides to tourists ascending the Taal Volcano’s crater.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the situation at the island to Alert Level 4 after the volcano’s eruption last Sunday. Residents were forced to evacuate and also had no choice but to leave the animals behind.
In a report by Inquirer.net, many pigs died after being trapped in bamboo pig pens. Cows were also seen buried in thick ash.
On Tuesday, January 14, residents came back to the island and rescued four horses, which were all covered in mud. A 20-member team from the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) was also deployed on the island to conduct an ocular visit.
Chris Palcis, MMDA team leader, told Inquirer.net that the local government of Balete had designated an area on the mainland for their rescued animals.
