The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) announced the 2020 winners of its annual photo contest for pictures taken by zoo and aquarium staff and volunteers.
To celebrate the zoos and aquariums protecting animals amid the stress of the coronavirus pandemic, 12 winners were chosen across four categories for the awards.
“The Boy in the Red Coat” won first prize in the Life in a BIAZA Collection Category.
“I think this picture perfectly represents how up-close experiences with animals in good zoos can inspire a lifelong fascination with nature,” Robert Everett, who took the photo of the young boy at the Chester Zoo, told Insider.
Chris Townsend’s photo of a Sulawesi black crested macaque at the Newquay Zoo Wild Planet Trust was the runner-up in the Life in a BIAZA Collection category.
A markhor photographed from behind at the RZSS Highland Wildlifr Park was highly commended in the same category. Alyson Houston titled her photograph “Markhor Overlooking His Enclosure,” showing the view of the wonderful mountains.
For Behind the Scenes category, Donovan Lewis won first place with his “Hold Your Gaze” photo. He snapped a shot of a diver and sand tiger swimming together at the Blue Planet Aquarium.
Niall Owen’s photo of a great grey owl being weighed at the Welsh Mountain Zoo was runner-up for the Behind the Scenes category.
For Hearts and Minds category, Eleanor Stobbart’s photo of “Thao whipping frogs” won first place. She took it at the Paignton Zoo Wild Planet Trust.
Samantha Allworthy’s photo of a prehensile-tailed porcupine at the Longleat Safari Park won runner-up for the category.
