With dazzling green eyes, a spotted coat reminiscent of ancient murals, and a lineage that stretches back to the time of pharaohs, the Egyptian Mau carries an air of mystique and elegance.
Delving deeper into the hidden secrets of this fascinating feline, Animal Scene spoke with veterinarian Dr. Rich Briones, board member of the Philippine Rabbit & Cavy Club, Inc., to unravel the Egyptian Mau’s history, quirks, and charms.
A CAT FIT FOR ROYALTY

The Egyptian Mau is practically living, purring history. With depictions dating as far back as 1550 B.C., these Cats were once the esteemed companions of pharaohs, lounging in opulent palaces and gracing sacred temples.
“In ancient Egypt, Cats were revered, and the Egyptian Mau is no exception,” Briones shared. “There are frescoes and papyrus scrolls that depict their ancestors as prized companions of nobility.”
The breed’s modern resurgence is thanks to Princess Nathalie Troubetskoy, a true Cat enthusiast with a royal touch. “She was gifted a Kitten with an enchanting spotted coat and later discovered that it was a descendant of the rare Egyptian Mau. That revelation ignited efforts to preserve and celebrate the breed,” Briones recounted.
BORN SPOTTED

The Egyptian Mau is nature’s masterpiece, adorned with naturally occurring spots — not a designer creation, but a gift from a wild ancestor, the African Wildcat (Felis lybica). “Unlike some spotted Cats whose patterns are bred into them, the Mau’s markings are as authentic as their rich history. Even their skin carries these spots!” said Briones.
Beyond their beauty, Maus are built for speed. “These Cats aren’t just pretty — they’re lightning-fast! The Egyptian Mau is one of the quickest domestic Cats, clocking in at an impressive 30 to 36 miles per hour,” Briones said.
With longer hind legs and a unique skin flap, much like a Cheetah’s, they can cover great distances in just a few bounds. “They have a need for speed and a love for high places, so don’t be surprised if your Mau surveys the household from atop a bookshelf!”

PLAYFUL NATURE
Despite their sleek and agile appearance, Egyptian Maus are also known for their playful nature. They love interactive play, particularly games that mimic hunting.
“They’ll stalk, chase, and pounce on anything that moves — it’s in their DNA,” Briones added. Owners often find that feather wands, laser pointers, and puzzle feeders keep them mentally and physically engaged.

CHATTY CAT
The Egyptian Mau is not just a Cat but also a conversationalist. “They take their time to assess new people, but once they feel at home, they will talk your ear off,” Briones said. “Many [humans] say their Maus will ‘answer back’ when spoken to — it’s as if they understand every word!”
Take Vzik, a champion Egyptian Mau from Russia cared for by Jaime Lim. “Vzik is a chatterbox through and through. Once he’s comfortable, he’ll respond to anything you say!” shared Briones. Vzik’s personality is just as striking as his looks, and he’s made his mark on the Cat show circuit after bringing home multiple awards and a coveted Champion title.

CARING FOR AN EGYPTIAN MAU
Thinking of bringing a little piece of Egyptian history into your home? Be prepared for an energetic and inquisitive companion.
“They are muscular Cats and need a diet that fuels their active lifestyle,” Briones advised. “Finding the right food can be tricky since they require a balance of protein and nutrients tailored to their needs.”
Space is another must-have. “These Cats love to run, leap, and climb. A good Cat tree, sturdy furniture, and even an exercise wheel are great ways to keep them engaged. And be sure to Cat-proof your home—your Mau may find the highest spot in the house, whether you intend them to or not!”
When it comes to grooming, Egyptian Maus are delightfully low maintenance. “Their short, satiny coat sheds just enough to remind you they’re there but requires very little brushing,” Briones noted. “However, they do have one luxury — they love sunbathing! Many owners find their Maus sprawled out in the warmest spot in the house, soaking up the sun.”

ENDURING LEGACY
With their regal history, captivating looks, and charmingly vocal nature, the Egyptian Mau is a breed like no other. While they’re still rare, more and more Cat lovers around the world — including here in the Philippines — are discovering their magic.
“It’s amazing to see this breed gaining recognition locally,” Briones said. “They have an ancient soul and a lively spirit, making them truly one-of-a-kind companions.”
For those enchanted by the idea of caring for one, she offers this final word of advice: “Make sure you’re ready for the commitment. These Cats are talkative, intelligent, and full of energy. If you can match their enthusiasm, you’ll have an unforgettable friend for life.”
