The Labour Party’s Animal Welfare Manifesto proposes a number of major overhauls to the British protections for animals. This includes ending the use of cages on British farms by 2025, including the use of whips by jockey, and banning people from owning monkeys as pet.
“From bringing forward the landmark Hunting Act to protecting the treatment of domestic animals under the Animal Welfare Act, Labour has always placed the welfare of animals high on the policy agendy,” said Sue Hayman, shadow environment secretary.
“Labour will ensure that we have a comprehensive legislative agenda in place to make sure that the UK has animal rights protections equal to or better than anywhere in the world,” she added.
Puppy smuggling and the extension of animal cruelty laws that include wild animals are also part of the proposed manifesto.
The party adds that they will appoint an animal welfare commissioner to ensure the standards of any new legislation and post-Brexit trade deals.
