The first edition of Reptile X was recently held at the Philippine Columbian Association in Paco by the Philippine Herpetological and Invertebrates Club, Inc. (PHIC). Featuring reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, the show is aimed at campaigning for legal, responsible ownership and trade of such animals in the country.
Talks about various species for hobbyists and exhibits entertained visitors to the event, which came about as a venue to provide keepers, breeders, and fanciers of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates a venue through which to interact.
“We want to form a standard and educate the enthusiasts on the proper housing, escape prevention, emergency medical advice, care, maintenance, and management of our pets. Educate the public, and there will be new hobbyists who will know the right way and dos/don’ts of the hobby,” explained Jaime Lim; Reptile X was his brainchild.
PHIC is composed of clubs with different specialty interests; some groups even have their own independent successful shows. The PHIC aims to “…be a united voice to strengthen the cooperation between animal keepers and the government institutions involved.”
Currently united under its banner are the Boa Keepers of the Philippines, Congo Charlie Reptile Jungle, Zoomed Philippines, Philippine Tortoise Enthusiasts, Philippine United Keepers of Exotics, Exotic Feeders Philippines, Stingray Club of the Philippines, and the Philippine Arowana and Lou Han Society (PALHS). They plan to hold their first show in the last quarter of this year.
