Sharks are known to be the predators you do not want to mess with. Because of the infamous “Jaws” movie, the animals surely did have a bad reputation.
These animals were known to stalk and sniff out their prey before attacking, but scientists have discovered a new species of shark that only glows in the dark for the prey to come to them willingly.
American Pocket Shark is the first shark that glows in the dark to be discovered in the Gulf of Mexico. According to a new study by Tulane University, the shark is less fearsome than it is wondrous.
A tiny American Pocket Shark was first discovered back in 2010 when a group of scientists were studying sperm whales in the Gulf. In 2013, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) researcher Mark Grace found another one.
“Both are separate species, each from separate oceans,” Grace said, according to CNN. “Both are exceedingly rare.”
The study explains the shark secretes a glowing fluid from a tiny pocket gland near its front fins, which helps in attracting its prey.
