The coronavirus pandemic has urged more people to open their homes to shelter animals for companionship as many struggle coping with isolation. It’s safe to say that a lot of people are first-time human companions tontheir new furry pals, and being a new fur-rent is no easy task.

Dr. Hunter Finn, a 27-year-old veterinarian living in Arlington, Texas is using his social media platform to educate pet owners on how to properly take care of their companion animals.

Now boasting with 1.3 million followers on TikTok, here are some of Finn’s important facts and tips to keep in mind, whether you’re a newbie pet parent or not.

1. Why do dogs eat grass? Are they sick?

“No. It’s a very normal behavior most likely passed down from their ancestors.”

2. Why are dogs’ noses wet? Are they sick if it’s dry?

“Dry dies not mean sick. Wet noses help their sense of smell and helps coold them down.”

3. Things to avoid at the pet store from a vet.

“a. Pig ears – Very fatty and can contribute to obesity, vomiting, diarrhea, and higher chance pf bacterial growth.

b. Bones (raw or processed) and hooves – These will wear or break your dog’s teeth and possibly cause gastrointestine problems.

c. Rope toys – These won’t always cause problems. But if shredded, ingested, and unable to be parted, it can be life threatening.”

4. What are vets checking during a physical exam?

“a. Feeling lymph nodes for any enlargement or assymetry.

b. Ears and skin for infections or tumors.

c. Mouth for dental disease or growths.

d. Heart for murmurs or irregular rhythm
