With time on their hands due to the coronavirus pandemic, some pet owners decided to teach their companion animals to converse with them.
Through the use of a custom soundboard, some humans are finally understanding what their pets truly want to tell them.
Christina Hunger, a speech pathologist and owner of Stella the dog, decided to use an adaptive device to communicate with her companion. When the Catahoula/Blue Heeler mix wants to “talk” to her, she steps on the buttons that corresponds to hunger that has been programmed to the device.
One day, Stella was whining at the front door and kept pacing back and forth. Stella then walked to her device and tapped “Want,” “Jake” “Come then stood in front of the door until Hunger’s fiance, Jake, came home a few minutes later on. Stella then pressed “Happy” and rolled over for a belly rub.
“I’m in constant amazement and shock,” Hunger told PEOPLE in an interview. “Every day, she says something cooler than she said the day before.”
Hunger began teaching Stella words when she was just about eight weeks old. Now, the dog knows at least 29 words and can combine up to five words to make a sentence.
“The way she uses words to communicate and the words she’s combing is really similar to a 2-year-old child,” she said as she continues to document Stella’s progress on her blog, Hunger for Words, and Instagram.
