A giant tortoise that had lived at the Little Rock Zoo for nearly three decades has died on Friday.
The zoo announced that the 580-pound (263-kilogram) Aldabra tortoise, whose name was Ed, was euthanized on Friday after weeks of staying under veterinary care due to an intestinal problem that apparently cannot be resolved.
Ed was originally from an island in the Seychelles off the coast of Africa. He was caught in the wild in 1990 and was transferred to the Louisville Zoo before landing on the Little Rock zoo in 1991.
Sadly, Ed is the second animal to die at the zoo in recent days. The first one was Trudy, a 63-year-old western lowland gorilla who is believed to be the oldest in captivity that died on Thursday.
