It was raining heavily in Brazil one day and a little stray cat was seeking shelter from the storm. With nowhere else to go, he went inside the Order of Attorneys of Brazil (OAB) building and decided to stay.

However, the stray cat’s stay was not welcome to everyone at the firm. Some people filed complaints, stating the fact that a stray cat hanging around the reception desk and meeting everyone, even newcomers, is not suitable for the company. Also, he was very small and people were afraid they might step on him.

To avoid those complaints, the board of the law firm decided to hire the cat as an official employee.

Dr. Jeanette Lareda, an OAB employee, shared the story of the stray cat, who they now call Leon, on a Facebook post. “In order to avoid some new complaints the board gave the solution: Hire the cat as an employee,” she said

Initially, he was hired to welcome people coming into the building. But, he had been promoted as a lawyer.

“In February, it rains a lot in the state of Amapa, so he arrived at OAB fleeing from the rain and thunder. For a week, he was fed and protected in a box until he got hired,” representatives of OAB told Bored Panda in an interview. “[They said] there was no space for him because it is a serious institution. So the president [of the OAB] determined the hiring and gave him an employee badge.”

Now, everyone calls him Dr. Leon and his Instagram page has more than 48,000 followers. With his presence in the company, OAB has also been inspired to launch an animal right institute in his name, “Instituto Dr. Leon.”

The company clarifies they do no house all animals, but they will fund the NGOs in town to be an example for Brazil.
