92 Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) turtle hatchlings were released last April 23 at Sitio Dolongin, Brgy. Matiag, Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte.
The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Siocon team received a call about the presence of the hatchlings in the area. Mr. Pili Amala, a local bantay dagat, said they had seen a marine turtle nesting in the area in March, so he immediately reported it to their barangay chairman. The site was secured with a net fence and they conducted periodic monitoring to ensure its protection forom threats, such as poachers and stray animals.
CENRO Siocon Team of Siocon Conservation and Development Section (CDS) together with a representative from the Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (MFAR and barangay chairman of Matiagg released tall 92 Olive Ridley turtles hatchlings to the sea.
CENRO says they continue their information, education and communication (IEC) campaign in coastal communities to impart te importance of conserving and protecting the Pawikan.
