Because of the mandatory lockdown to prevent the further spread of the deadly coronavirus disease, it makes it impossible to visit the Shedd Aquarium and celebrate the aquarium’s oldest sea otter.
Still, the institution’s staff was not hindered and created the best birthday bash for Yaku, the sea otter.
The caretakers created a frozen “cake” that was made of otter-approved delicacies like fish, clams and squid – all of which are Yaku’s favorite. A birthday celebration is not complete with a “Happy Birthday” song, which was performed by caretaker Michelle on violin.
Yaku was born to two otters that had been rescued from the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 and is one of five rescued otters who call the Shedd Aquarium its home.
In the wild, sea otters typically live 10 to 15 years, but for those who live in facilities like the aquarium, most of them live in their early 20s – which is a huge milestone.
