If you are planning on welcoming a new furry friend into your home, the month of November might just be the perfect time to do it. This month is Adopt a Senior Pet month, which is dedicated to helping older furries find their fur-ever homes.

Oftentimes, senior animals are overlooked especially in animal shelters, because many of them are already facing health challenges and might not look too pleasing or “too adorable” compared to puppies.

“They actually have the most love to give, so they deserve the most love,” said Joy Oswskey, a kennel clerk at the Humane Society of Douglas County. “My senior pet was just amazing. He loved us so much.”

Here are a few reasons why you should adopt a senior companion animal.

  1. You will be able to easily assess senior animals’ personality and activity level to determine whether they could be a good fit for your lifestyle.
  2. Senior animals are probably already house-trained, so they are often laid back and just content with napping on your couch.
  3. They don’t require much activity, just a stroll in the park would already make them happy!

If you have already decided to adopt a senior animal, here are some pointers to get you started in helping them settle down in your home.

  1. Allow your new pal to slowly get comfortable in your home. Have some patience and let them explore.
  2. Having a safe space is crucial for your senior companion. Designate a perfect spot for them where they can lay down and rest, without being bothered.
  3. Placing yoga mats or carpet runners may also help your furry companions, especially if they are suffering from arthritis, like most senior animals do.
  4. Lastly, there is nothing more important than taking your companion animal to a visit to your trusted veterinarian. You may want to discuss potential medications and needed diets to keep your doggo or cat healthy.
