Humane Society warns that there are poisonous plants that can cause adverse reactions from mild nausea to even death in animal companions. Maybe it will be better to “pet-proof” your home, too!
Here are some of the house plants that are safe for your companion animals.
1. Gloxinia
Sinningia speciosa plants are popular gift plants, especially during holidays like Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. This will not harm your cat or dog, and it is easy to care for. Provide indirect light and constant moisture for this Brazilian native.
2. African Violet
African violets (Saintpaulia) are one of the most popular flowering houseplants due to their ability to bloom in low light and their affinity for the same environmental conditions that people like: moderate temperatures and average humidity.
3. Baby Tears
Baby Tears (Soleirolia soleirolii) plants cover the soil and might discourage pets that like to dig in your houseplants. They are best placed in small hanging baskets to give character to your terrariums.
4. Banana
The Banana tree (Musa) is a large houseplant safe for all pets. They strive well with a rich soil, bright light, and regular watering.
5. Venus Fly Trap
Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) are non-toxic to cats and dogs. Just like in any other plants, a bright light and irrigation with distilled water will keeo them in good condition.
On the other hand, here are some house plants that are dangerous for your animal companions:
1. Lilies
The Lily family of plants is quite large, but there are some members of the family that are toxic to dogs and cats.
The Mauna Loa, also known as Peace Lily, is toxic to dogs and cats. The Stargazer and Easter Lilies are toxic for cats only. It can be fatal for felines if it goes untreated as it affects their appetite and kidney. On the other hand, cats and dogs can have trouble swallowing due to irritated lips and tongue if they ingested a Peace Lily.
2. Aloe Vera
While Aloe Vera has skin-smoothing properties for humans, it can prove deadly for animals. Its gel substance can harm a dog’s digestive system when ingested.
3. Elephant Ear
Elephant Ear (Caladium) is also know by its other common names such as Malanga, Via Sori, Pai, Taro, and Cape or Ape. It has chemicals that can cause your pets to suffer from oral problems, such as increased salivation or drooling, vomiting, and difficulty in swallowing.
