Whitley County Sheriff’s Department is currently mourning after losing one of their best police dogs in a dangerous police chase last Wednesday.
Indiana State Police officials said officers spotted a car traveling on U.S. 30 near Foxfarm Road that matched the description of a car that was reported to be taken in a carjacking case earlier that day near LifePlex gym in Plymouth.
The officers thought they had it easy after immediately pulling over the 2016 Chrysler on U.S. 30 near Meijer Drive in Kosciusko County, but the carjacker drove off towards east on U.S. 30.
The police chase turned into several counties. When they entered the Whitley County, a deputy placed stop sticks, but the Chrysler driver did not waver and struck the police car, which carried K-9 Cas. The car burst into flames and officers failed to save Cas from the vehicle. Meanwhile, the deputy was unharmed.
Police said the perpetrator had minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
