Photographer Sam Rowley spent five nights on the London Underground’s platform to capture the two mice squabbling over a piece of food dropped by a passenger.
Because of his persistence, Rowley won the Wildlife Photographer of the Year LUMIX People’s Choice award.
Rowley spent almost a week of late nights at central London tube stop, down to the ground on his belly to get the perfect shot at a low-angle view.
“I usually take a burst of photos and I got luck with his shot, but then I had spent five days lying on a platform so it was probably going to happen at some point,” Rowley told BBC. He is currently working in Bristol as a researcher for BBC’s natural history film-making unit.
The Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition has been organized by London’s Natural History Museum.
“Sam’s image provides a fascinating glimpse into how wildlife functions in a human-dominated environment. The mice’s behavior is sculpted by our daily routine, the transport we use and the food we discard. This image reminds us that while we may wander past it every day, humans are inherently intertwined with the nature that is on our doorstep – I hope it inspires people to think about and value this relationship more,” Sir Michael Dixon, the institution’s director said.
